Teal grew up in South Jersey and found running boring until her family convinced her to go out for cross country in high school. Teal lacked the confidence to try to run collegiately at the University of Richmond, but ran a marathon while in college. After an unspectacular debut in 4:07, Teal thought she’d had enough of the sport. Following graduation and a few years of minimal running, however, she found a new level of commitment, and whittled her PR down to 2:53:10 before joining GRC in June 2012. In 2014, Teal qualified for the Olympic Trials in the marathon, running 2:42:13 at the California International Marathon. At the Trials, Teal, not known for her heat-running prowess, finished an outstanding 72nd place in extremely challenging conditions.

Teal received a doctorate in neuroscience from Georgetown University in 2014 and currently works at a freelance science writer. She blogs about her training and racing at milestothetrials.com.
