In 2012, Emmett joined his mother for the final 4 miles of the Boston Marathon, sparking his own pursuit of running. Emmett then spent his undergrad years training for and racing marathons. In 2019, before beginning a PhD in environmental economics at the University of Oregon, he hiked from Mexico to Canada on the Pacific Crest Trail. This experience sent him into ultra-trail running, his primary focus for 2020-2021. However, he couldn’t live in “Tracktown” without doing some shorter races on the track. Thus, he’s switched between the track in the spring, trails in the summer, and roads in the fall. He moved to DC in 2023 for a research fellowship with the EPA’s Water Economics Center, where he researches how to value water quality improvements.
